Abstract: One of the greatest problems of Nigeria, which has threatened her stability and very existence today is the issue of the educational gap between the North and South. This issue, which has been considered as a cankerworm to Nigerian unity, has its cause traced to many historical factors in relation to the disproportional development of education. Many measures or policies at one time or the other have been put in place to solve this problem, yet the gap still remains the same. This empirical study using a survey design sought to identify these measures, find out their effectiveness and problems militating against the effectiveness of these measures and ways these problems can be solved. The result of the study indicated that there were measures put in place to solve this problem but these measures were rendered ineffective due to problems such as lack of awareness about the importance of western education, high level corruption, incompetence of personnel involved in implementing resources, etc. Ways by which these problems could be minimized such as creating awareness on the value of western education, providing adequate funds, establishing effective machinery to enforce accountability and so on were proffered.
