Abstract: The study titled “An Evaluation of the Digitization of Broadcast Media in Nigeria” sought to critically evaluate the contentious issues in Nigeria’s digitization efforts. Using the technological determinism theory as a framework, considerable literature and concepts were reviewed. The research design employed was the survey with the questionnaire as the primary instrument. Oral interview was used as a secondary method of generating data. The study identified four major stakeholders namely: broadcast audience, broadcast policy formulators, broadcasters and broadcast equipment marketers/manufacturers for the purpose of administering the instruments. 600 respondents were sampled but only 555 were used for the analysis. The data generated were collated and categorized using the descriptive and inferential statistical methods of analysis. Findings revealed that, the Nigerian government has no policy in place for its digitization efforts. Also, that the level of awareness and sensitization of the audience is low as many of the respondents did not know about the digitization of broadcasting. However, most of the broadcast stations have made significant progress at digitizing their operations. The study concluded that inspite of Nigeria’s own deadline of digitizing by the year 2012; as at the last quarter of 2012, Nigeria was yet to put in place a policy for digitization. Indeed very little is being done in all areas to deepen the digitization of broadcasting in the country. Against this backdrop, the study recommended that, the Nigerian government should as a matter of urgency put in place a digitization policy that takes into account the interests of all the major stakeholders, while embarking on massive public awareness and sensitization campaigns to mobilize the citizenry for the digitization of broadcasting by 2015 in line with ITU resolution 1185.
